Minty Fresh!

erratic_prophet | 08 March, 2006 12:06

The herbal remedy for migraines I mentioned? Yeah, I've tried it. It seems to be helping, too. It's not a cure-all. But I didn't expect it to be either. Before I get into all of that, let's recap, shall we?

I have a buddy at work who's into kinesiology and herbal remedies and oils. I mentioned my migraines and how I was afraid to increase my Imitrex dosage because it would double my current dose. She checked out my energy level with some nifty weird tests and saw that it was good and told me to use...peppermint oil.

When she mentioned peppermint oil, I had a bit of a d'oh moment. It makes sense, after all. The minty coolness would help ease the pain, wouldn't it? But where to apply it?

She told me to rub a drop in at my temples (more into the hairline or even the hair if it's too strong and burns your eyes), across the forehead (or just a dab in the center if you prefer), and up the nape. The nape, she explained, was important to get correct. Start at the very base of the nape (the knobby part where your neck meets your back) and move in small, clockwise circles up the neck and into the hair until you meet the base of the skull. Always go up, she told me, because that keeps your energy up. If you were to go down, you'd be pulling energy away.

I know that sounds kinda hokey, but I was willing to try anything. She even showed me what it was like to take away my energy and then give it back. It was freaky weird, yo. I'm a believer.

So I ran out and bought a bottle of peppermint oil. My buddy-- we'll just call her M from now on, shall we?-- told me to be sure to not ingest this type of oil since it wasn't the right kind for that. Be sure to read your labels, people! I told her not to worry, since I grow mint and could make my own mint tea, if needed. As soon as I bought the stuff, I slapped it on. Just how she taught me. It was like a soothing ice pack on my head and neck. It felt so nice. Until I stepped outside in the cold air. Then I nearly froze to death.

It only lasts for maybe a half hour at a time, but you can reapply as needed and no prescription necessary! It helps, I feel better, and now I smell minty fresh too!

I know that works. I'm so glad you discovered it. It's good to be minty fresh (and even better to be migraine free!)

Anita- Wow.. I have to get used to typing that instead of Ms. Q, don't I? I'm thrilled to have learned this little nifty, minty tip and even more happy to be able to share it.

I keep an open mind when it comes to alternative medicines or complimentary medicines. You've found something that works Brilliant!!

Michelle- Thanks! I've been dying to join coworker M in a few of those kinesiology classes and even her oils and herbal remedy classes. That type of stuff has always fascinated me. Unfortunately, the classes seem to run on a night that I'm typically scheduled to work. I'll see if I can work something out.

I've tried it twice when I've had a migraine. I found it took about a half hour to kick in. On the othe rhand, I applied too much and too close to my eyes and definitely expreienced the burning eyes. sigh.
